Fredericksburg Trip, September 25-27, 2018

Tuesday, September 25, 2018 - 3:00pm to Thursday, September 27, 2018 - 5:00pm
Slideshow type:

Nine, adventurous TIAA souls headed to Fredericksburg on September 25, 2018 to check in at the Main Street B&B.  We enjoyed "happy hour" on their upstairs balcony overlooking Main Street at 5:00 before adventuring out.  That evening we walked to Mamacitas for Mexican food before carpooling to the Enchanted Rock to view the dark skies (forgot that it was harvest moon time and the stars were certainly out-shown that night).  The next morning it was back to the balcony for a delicious breakfast before walking across the street to the National Museum of the Pacific War.  We spent the next three hours being awed by this outstanding collection of military artifacts before dining at the Old German Bakery/Restaurant.  We rearranged our planned schedule for that afternoon so some of us could visit the library and various shops while others could go back to the museum (the tickets were good for 48 hours) and work our way through to the dropping of the atom bombs and the Japanese surrender.  Then it was time for another "happy hour" before driving 10 miles to the Old Tunnel State Park for a private talk by Ranger Bob and a close-up-and-personal view of one-million-plus, free-tail bats ascending over our heads to chase their own dinner (fruit moths).  We drove around the corner and had delicious sandwiches (and beer) at Alamo Springs Restaurant (a small biker's bar) before returning to Fredericksburg.  On Thursday it was breakfast as usual on the balcony before leaving Fredericksburg to tour the Wildseed Farms (and making purchases, of course) and then on to the LBJ Ranch at Stonewall, TX.  We could board Air Force One-Half (Johnson's official plane that could land on a short landing field) and see the house, his old vintage cars and the Johnson family cemetery.  Then it was time for some of us to go on to Austin while the rest headed back to Dallas.  A great time was had by all so please think about joining us on our next adventure.
