On a bright and cool day when comments such as "awesome" and "perfect" were used to describe the weather, some 86 golfers teed off for the 18th Annual TIAA Charity Golf Tournament at the Woodbridge Golf Club in Wylie, TX.
By the end of the day, the tournament had raised $22,025 in donations to benefit The Senior Source. TI and the Texans Credit Union were underwriters for the tournament, making it possible for 100 percent of the donations to go directly to the non-profit agency that helps frail and needy seniors in North Texas.
During lunch, there was a special presentation honoring TI retiree, Herby Locke, shown above receiving the TIAA Certificate of Appreciation from Max Post, TIAA Activities Chair, in recognition of his contributions to the TIAA Charity Golf Tournament. In the year 2000, Herby volunteered to help start the tournament and has provided support over the years. In a certificate presented by the TIAA, Herby is cited for helping to start a tournament that has raised more than $350,000 for charity since 2000, thanks to individual contributors, golfers, and corporate sponsors. Because of health reasons, Courtney Miller took over his responsibilities several years ago and has run the tournament.
In recent years, the TIAA tournament has joined forces with the TI United Way Tournament, with much support provided by Ricky Lewin and the active TIers. Since the TI United Way Campaign is being shifted to a new schedule, beginning in April 2018, the active TI golfers decided to join with the TIAA golfers for a tournament on October 16 of this year to benefit The Senior Source. In 2018, we will return to the usual format of TI active golfers benefiting United Way and the TIAA golfers benefiting The Senior Source.
Legend Sponsors for this year’s tournament were: Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Texas; Chasewood Wealth Management, Steve J. Combest; Edward Jones & Co., Jerry Pierce, CFP; Highland Springs; and The University of Texas at Dallas.
There were two winning teams – one for TIAA golfers and another for the active TI golfers. Winning First Place (Net) for TIAA was the JFE International Consultants Team of Francisco Escobar, Peter Mailandt, and Bill Wisseman. For the Active TI Golfers, First Place (Net) went to: John Zuffinetti, Rich Lamb, Adam Manuel, and Josh Teague.
Individual TI winners were: Closest to Pin (Female) Terry Grosh; Closest to Pin #2 (Male) Dave Lafe; Longest Drive #9 (Female) Melinda Mendoza; and Longest Drive #9 (Male) Austin Eisenhart.
Other Corporate Sponsors for the tournament included a Champion Sponsor: Ebby Halliday, Realtors and three Masters Sponsors: The Dallas Foundation, SVTronics, and The Tradition.
A major factor in the success of this year’s result was the generous donations of more than 40 Individual donors, as well as the contributions of the golfers.
