By Tuesday, February 8, 28 TIAA members and guests had registered to go to the movies. Well, not exactly, but we did enjoy flavored popcorn, candy and soft drinks at the Texins Activity Center while Larry Ratliff, a noted movie crtic, discussed 13 of the 25 movies made in Texas. When it comes to notable movies, many of them take place in the Lone Star State of myth and memory. Now all of them weren’t necessarily filmed here (“Giant” has a house facade and windmill near Marfa but the movie was actually filmed in LA) but as long as their stories take place (mostly) within our borders, it counts as one of our own. We heard about his interviews with stars like Paul Newman and Shirley MacLaine as well as his critique on movies like “Hud”, “Tender Mercies”, “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”, “Giant”, “Terms of Endearment”, “Bonnie and Clyde”, “The Alamo” (two different versions – but the 1960 movie with John Wayne was the best one, of course). He brought and set up equipment so we could see exerpts from the movies. This brought back a lot of memories for our retirees.
