Powers of Attorney (POA) – Financial and Medical – Uses and Abuses

Apr 29, 2024

The program was held at the Texins Fitness Center Wednesday, April 24th. 2024.

It was presented by Texas-licensed attorney John C. VanBuskirk.

The program began with Carl Burlbaw, Assistant Director of the Elder Financial Safety Center at the Senior Source. Their focus is threefold.

– Prevention from too little income and too much debt

– Protection for those struggling to manage their affairs.

– Prosecution for cases involving exploitation and abuse.

Carl then introduced John. His presentation was not only very informative, but entertaining, a difficult task for a very serious subject. Among many important points, he emphasized that the two sets of papers authorizing medical and financial powers of attorney needed to be physically handled differently.

His PowerPoint presentation was followed by several questions that he answered with the same humor we enjoyed earlier. Interestingly, we laughed at the one-size-fits-all “It depends!” that began most of his responses.

He offered to come back to talk about Estate Planning. Your Education Committee definitely plans to take him up on that in the future.

The event was well attended. Everyone enjoyed the ‘Box Lunch’ (choice of ham, chicken, turkey, tuna, and vegan sandwiches) with potato salad, a pickle, fruit salad, a chocolate-covered strawberry and a cookie.
