September, 8, 2022 – Dolphin Heights Community Garden Work Day
4819 Silver Ave, Dallas, TX 75223
The greens are the stars at the Dolphin Heights Community Garden in East Dallas, which for almost 18 years has been championed by a woman affectionately known as the Mayor of Dolphin Heights. "I got that name actually from Mayor (Mike) Rawlings," said Anna Hill, the longtime neighborhood association president. When she moved to the neighborhood in the mid-1980s there was "lots of criminal activity," she said. She and a couple of other residents eventually decided it was time to take back the neighborhood. They formed the Dolphin Heights Neighborhood Association with Hill as president.
Anna's longtime friend, Willie, was instrumental in helping to create the Dolphin Heights Community Garden located next to Anna's home. Together, they fed the neighborhood with fresh vegetables from spring through fall months. Sadly, Willie passed away a few years ago and through volunteer efforts and donations Anna has built a memorial within the garden.
Our TIAA volunteers will help Anna Hill hoe, till, and rake the community garden to prepare for planting fall vegetables. Bring gloves, hat, and sun screen. Effort required will be moderate. Anna will provide tools. And do come see Willie's memorial!
Volunteers are asked to drive to the Dolphin Heights community garden located at 4819 Silver Ave, Dallas Tx 75223 to arrive by about 9:30 am, Thursday, September 8, 2022. Please register your attendance by logging onto TIAlumni.org and click on the event’s name from the “Calendar” tab then fill out your registration information.
