When it comes to weird, Texas has some serious bragging rights so let’s go visit one of them. H. D. Snow learned the business of house moving early by working at his father’s company starting at the age of 12. When Snow started his own business in the 1960s, he began traveling the country, trading tips with others movers; and, along the way, he discovered that third, fourth, and fifth generation movers weren’t interested in the family business. With the threat of house-moving history falling to the wayside, Snow set aside a half-acre of his business’ land to display a collection of vintage artifacts and the House Moving Museum opened as a full-fledged museum in 1985. The museum carries a collection of historic moving equipment, from rollers and boomers to dollies, jacks, and bars and there are also plenty of pictures showing equipment in use, including images of buildings being pulled by horses. Mr. Snow is scheduled to meet us and tell all about the challenges he overcame in 65 years of house moving. We will ride a bus leaving at 10:00 am, take the free tour and enjoy lunch at China Flag Buffet (so bring lunch money). We plan to return to TI by 3:00 pm. Transportation cost is $15 for members and $17 for nonmembers.
