On the 29th of January in the year 2024, Joseph Francis Rizzo, known to his friends and family as Joe, completed his earthly journey at the age of 86. Born on May 23, 1937, in Brooklyn, New York, Joe lived a full and honorable life, marked by his service to his country, commitment to his family, and his contributions to his community.
Joe’s early life in Brooklyn laid the foundation for a man of strong character and charm. His wit was as sharp as it was endearing, always ready with a story or a playful quip, particularly for those he gently teased for their left-wing views. His proud Italian heritage was a vibrant thread in the fabric of his identity.
A patriot at heart, Joe served with distinction in the United States Air Force for eight years, before his deep commitment to his nation led him to reenlist in the United States Marine Corps. His 21 years of service included a tour in Vietnam, and his military career took him to Spain, Okinawa, San Diego, and Quantico, where he excelled in various capacities before retiring honorably.
Upon his retirement from the military, Joe continued to lead a life of service. He joined Texas Instruments as a Quality Manager and Field Service Manager until he retired in 1993. His passion for education then propelled him to share his keen business acumen, teaching at both Navarro College and Georgetown ISD. Joe’s enthusiasm for learning left an indelible mark on his students and colleagues alike.
An alumnus of Midwood High School in Brooklyn and holder of an MBA from National University in San Diego, Joe was a man of intellect and curiosity. His pursuit of knowledge was matched by his love for distance running, target practice, investing, and travel. A staunch supporter of political freedom, Joe’s engagement in politics reflected his dedication to the principles he held dear.
He leaves behind his devoted wife, Phyllis Rizzo, with whom he shared a loving partnership since 1981, his devoted sister Joyce Sullivan, his loving children Debra Rizzo, Karl Smart with spouse Paula, Liz Smart, Chris Hunke, and Keith Hunke, as well as cherished sisters-in-law Jean Herbelin and Carol McElhannon with her husband Don. His legacy extends to three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, who will carry forward the light of his wisdom. Joe was preceded in his journey to eternity by his parents, Lucille (Polito) and Joseph A. Rizzo, and his grandson George Garrastazu.
A man of faith, Joe was a revered member of the Lorena Methodist Church, where he was active in the church community and found great solace and fellowship.
A service to honor Joe’s life will be held at Lorena Methodist Church on Monday, February 12. Visitation will begin at 9:30 am,, the service will begin at 10:30 am. Interment at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, Texas will begin at 2:00 pm, where he will be laid to rest with full military honors. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Lorena Methodist Church, Food Pantry, in Joe’s memory.
