This policy will be revised when needed and reviewed in detail at least annually by the TIAA President for consistency between policy and current practice.

Overview

The duties of the President are laid out in the TIAA Bylaws. The President is the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the TIAA.  Other key points are as follows:

The President acts as the primary interface between TIAA and TI.

In addition to appointing the 5th TIAA Board member as defined in the TIAA Bylaws, the President shall appoint the Vice Presidents of all committees and have general supervision of the work of TIAA.  The President shall have the authority to appoint ad hoc committees to work on special programs of TIAA.  The President’s Advisory Council, made up of past Presidents, is available to the President for advice and counsel to facilitate continuity.

The President shall preside at all meetings of TIAA, the Leadership Team and the Board of Directors. Should the President be unable to preside, the order of succession in presiding shall be: (1) Executive Vice President; or (2) other Board member designated by the President.

The President works closely with the Vice Presidents and committee chairs to continually assess the organization and find ways to improve processes and offerings. A key goal is to offer a wide variety of activities that will increase participation and involvement of both members and potential members.

The President strives to attend as many TIAA functions as possible to assess the overall effectiveness of the Association.

The President works with other TIAA leaders to develop succession plans for key positions.

With regard to the TIAA Administrator, either the President or the Treasurer approves the Administrator’s monthly time sheet. The President also participates in the annual review of the Administrator which is led by the Treasurer.
