2015 Golf Tournament Benefited United Way and The Senior Source

Oct 26, 2015

The 16th Annual TIAA Charity Golf Tournament raised more than $27,000 in donations and pledges for two worthwhile charities: the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas and The Senior Source. TI and the Texans Credit Union were underwriters for the tournament, making it possible for 100 percent of the donations to go directly to the charities.

More than 90 golfers – including active TIers, retirees, and sponsors – joined the tournament as a kickoff to the TI United Way Campaign. In total, 24 teams participated in the tournament on October 19 at the Woodbridge Golf Club in Wylie, TX. Click here to view a slideshow of photos taken by David Cauthron

Ellen Barker, who heads TI’s IT Department, addressed the golfers in the Opening Ceremony, thanking them for their contributions to the United Way. She also expressed her appreciation to the TIAA for their work in setting up the combined tournament again this year. Kelly Tutano, Development Associate for The Senior Source, spoke to golfers during the Award Ceremony, thanking them and the TIAA for their support over many years. Jenny Echols, who heads the United Way campaign for the IT area at Spring Creek, thanked the TI golfers and the TI Foundation for their contributions to the success of the tournament. She also expressed thanks to TI retiree, Courtney Miller, all the volunteers, and the staff of the Woodbridge Golf Club for their excellent support of the tournament.

Courtney Miller, tournament co-chair, presented a ceremonial check for $13,555 to a representative of The Senior Source. Legend Sponsors for the tournament were: Edward Jones & Co., Jerry Pierce, CFP; Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Texas; Highland Springs Continuing Care Retirement Community; and The University of Texas at Dallas. Other Corporate Sponsors included: Ebby Halliday, Realtors (Champion Sponsor), SVTronics and The Tradition (Master Sponsors).

Only fractions of a point separated the top three teams in the tournament. In a hard fought battle of 24 teams, three teams were tied, based on the gross score. After applying the tie-breakers, the Team Shankopotamuses – Oscar Sanchez, Justin Weeks, Dallas Webster, and Tom Strohm – won 1st Place and the right to have their names engraved on the coveted TIAA Golf Trophy. Tied for 2nd Place was the Edward Jones Team – Dan Murphree, Dale Campbell, and Jim Balaze – and Team Tiede – Kevin Tiede, David Crump, Tao Xu, and Shawn Hughes. After applying all the tie-breaker rules, Team Tiede was awarded 2nd Place.
